2015 GoogleScholar h5 Index Released

In June 2015, GoogleScholar released its new h-index metrics for journals. These are being updated on this site as we go through the data.

The “h-index” of a given journal is “the largest number h such that at least h articles in that publication were cited at least h times each. For example, a publication with five articles cited by, respectively, 17, 9, 6, 3, and 2, has the h-index of 3.” The h-5 number listed on is found on the metrics page and refers to “those of its articles that were published in the last five complete calendar years.” [Google Scholar Metrics].

Two Open Journals Merge (OL/JALN & JOLT)

“NEWBURYPORT, Mass. and LONG BEACH, Calif. (April 21, 2015) – The Online Learning Consortium (OLC) and the Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) community of the California State University are pleased to announce that they will combine efforts to expand scholarly research in the field of online education, with the merger of the journal Online Learning (formerly JALN) and the Journal of Online Learning and Teaching (JOLT). ”

May 2015 Site Updates

A new column has been added to the main and OAJ-Only tables: “OP2P,” which stands for “Open Pay to Publish.” This column is being populated with data as it is discovered. An indication of “Yes” means that one has to pay in order to publish in the open journal, or at least to make one’s article “open” even if the journal is typically subscription-based.

The reason for adding the “OP2P” column is due to the goal of this site to make known all journals related to Ed Tech, even including journals that have a “Pay to Publish” option.  It is important to understand that a pay option is sometimes indicative of a “predatory journal,” but in other cases, the pay option comes from a journal trying to balance the quite real costs of journal administration, marketing, etc.

An additional revision is to the “Type” entries. Previously, there had been three designations: “Sub.” (Subscription-based journal), “Open,” and “z” (Discontinued). Some journals will now be designated as S/O, which indicates a blend of subscription-only and open journals. One such example are journals by Springer, such as ETR&D, which has an “Open Publish” option for authors. The cost of open publishing is exorbitant, but it is an option if authors happen to be awash in funds.

There have been minor aesthetic changes to the site, including the change of the appearance of “Light Box” link for the journals (now light gray and dotted) rather than blue. The “Light Box” link, which is connected to a journal name, is a pop-up window that appears with all column data for a given journal. This is handy if one toggles off multiple columns (except journal name) and one still wishes to see some information about the journal.

A new journal has been added to the site, Journal of Education and e-Learning Research (JEELR). It is added in the spirit of inclusiveness, but prospective authors should take caution. For the moment it will not be designated as a “predatory” journal, but there are a number of factors besides the “pay to publish” option (listed at $50 US) that make it somewhat suspect. If any here feel that the practices of the journal violate professional ethics, please contact us and we will remove the journal from the list.

First, thanks for the great comments! As an example, “JS” wrote, “I am a graduate student in instructional design and technology and your site is exactly the source I needed. Thank you for putting this together, making it searchable/sort-able, and making it available for all to use.”

Thanks, also, for the suggestions / updates submitted thus far. As of today, the following changes have been made:

  1. Added Internet Learning Journal (a publication of the American Public University) to the list of open journals.
  2.  Added Current Issues in Emerging eLearning (CIEE) (a publication of the University of Massachusetts – Boston) to the list of open journals.
  3. The Turkish Online Journal of Educational Technology (TOJET) is evidently no longer SSCI listed, so that characteristic was removed.
  4. KM suggested a feature that allows one to *only* see open access journals. One way to do this is to type “open” in the search box. This is not a perfect solution as a couple of journals have “open” in their name, but refer to open learning and are subscription-based. What I have done today – thanks to Tony Hetrick’s awesome WordPress plug-in programming – is create a new data table for this site that appears on the newly added page “OAJs Only.” This allows one to see only the 89 OAJs currently in the database. You can still sort them using the same columns as on the Home page (except that the “Type” column is removed as it is superfluous on that particular table).
